EX1R

The XDCAM EX PMW-EX1R is the direct successor to Sony’s first entry into memory recording – the PMW-EX1. The PMW-EX1R features a range of ergonomic enhancements of the EX1, including an improved hand grip, a one-push S & Q switch and a one-push Auto Iris button. Other enhancements include SD recording in DVCAM, a Cache Recording Function, an Image Inversion Function and an IR remote control receptor on the rear of the camcorder’s handle allowing remote control from both the front and the rear of the camcorder. The PMW-EX1R utilizes three 1/2-inch type Exmor™ CMOS sensors, each with an effective pixel count of 1920 (H) x 1080 (V). This technology delivers superior picture performance with full-HD resolution and allows the camcorder to provide an excellent sensitivity of F10 and a remarkable signal-to-noise ratio of 54dB. The PMW-EX1R produces truly exceptional images in 1080p, 720p and 1080i HD. The PMW-EX1R is equipped with a high-quality, high-definition Fujinon 14x zoom lens specifically designed to offer optimum picture performance and unprecedented functionality. The full Sony XDCAM EX line-up provides stunning HD picture quality and efficient nonlinear operation, expanding the creative possibilities in every type of HD video production.

LCD Viewfinder

Using a LCD Viewfinder has changed the way I shoot with the EX1 dramatically!

Now I can use the camera  LCD monitor under any lighting conditions and focusing is much easier...

But the big change is... I can move the camera closer to my body, with the camera battery resting on my shoulder.  The camera is now more stable and there’s less strain on the arms.

Update coming soon:

The Hoodman mounting system and Hoodloupe with updated eyepiece.. The Hoodriser expands the Hoodloupe to 4.0” LCD screens.

LCD Viewfinder

Here’s a LCD Viewfinder made by Chris Young in Sydney Australia.

I like the fact, this unit is fixed to the monitor... mine tends to slip and often needs adjustment.

This VF was made from an electrical component 'jiffy box' from a electronics store, an old AJ-D700 Panny VF, some hi-density rubber strips and some Araldite epoxy resin.  I just moved the original magnifier glass from the bottom of the VF tube to the top where the plain glass dust/protector lens was... cut a hole in the jiffy box, glued the old VF bottom ring to the box and and bingo it all worked.  It gives me around about 98% of the screen, covers the outside of the safe action area markers, if you have them activated on the LCD.  The VF is designed as a tight friction push fit using the hi-density rubber strips at the top and bottom inner edges of the jiffy box, these grip onto the top and bottom edges of the LCD housing... plus they also keep out any extraneous light.  Presently these are held in place with gaffa tape as you will see... but they will be stuck in with glue or double sided sticky tape when I get around to it.  If the VF gets knocked with any force it just pops off and doesn't strain or damage the LCD unit.  An added bonus, it's also focusable for my old eyes!  Will tidy it up on next next revision but that's about it as it all work perfectly.  I use it in conjunction with a Varizoom VZ-LSP shoulder mount which is very light, configurable and allows sufficient adjustment to get the camera and VF into a comfortable viewing/shooting position.  I don't use the handle that the Varizoom girl is seen holding in the picture on the Varizoom link, just use the camera/lens grip as per a full sized camera.  100% improvement in ease of focusing, strong sunlight conditions, stability etc, much more like using a full sized piece of kit.  So far so good!  [Note: I am left eyed if you are wondering about the VF eyepiece rubbers]
